How Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Heroic Actions Led to the Success of Operation Black Tornado

A number of buildings in South Mumbai were attacked on the night of November 26, 2008. One of the structures where prisoners were held was the notable 100-year-old Taj Mahal Royal Residence Inn. The 51 Special Action Group (51 SAG) that was sent to the hotel to rescue the hostages was led by Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was also the team commander.

With a group of ten commandos, he entered the hotel and used the staircase to reach the sixth floor. The team suspected terrorists in a room on the fourth floor that was locked from the inside after removing hostages from the sixth and fifth floors as they descended the stairs.

As the commandos tore open the entryway, the round of fire by the fear mongers hit Commando Sunil Kumar Yadav in the two legs. Unnikrishnan was able to save Yadav and get him out of the room, but terrorists vanished after a grenade was thrown inside the room.

For about 15 hours, Unnikrishnan and his team continued to evacuate hostages from the hotel. Unnikrishnan and his team decided to climb the hotel’s central staircase on November 27 at around midnight because it was their only route to the hostages and terrorists. As was to be expected, terrorists ambushed the NSG team from the first floor when they saw commandos ascending the central staircase.

Seven bullets struck 27-year-old Commando Sunil Kumar Jodha, three in his left hand, one in his right palm, two in his right shoulder, and one in his chest. Unnikrishnan made arrangements for his evacuation and continued fighting terrorists. He then made the decision to pursue the terrorists alone as they attempted to flee to the next floor.

He was able to corner all four terrorists and take them to the Ballroom at the northern end of the Taj Mahal Hotel, where he gave his life in the process. According to NSG officials, his final words were, “Don’t come up, I will handle them.” NSG commandos later killed every one of the four fear-based oppressors caught in the Assembly hall and Wasabi café of the Mumbai Taj lodging.
